Fire Protection Technology: Basic Firefighter, CERT

The Basic Firefighter, Certificate provides you with the knowledge and skills required for entry-level positions in a wide range of fire departments. Upon certificate completion, you will be eligible to test for the Basic Structure Firefighter Certification with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. You also will be eligible to test for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) status with the National Registry of EMTs.

Enrollment in this program is limited. See the Selective Admissions  requirements in the How to Get Started section of this Catalog.

Marketable skills for this award include: critical thinking, leadership, problem solving, and technical skills.

Note: The below courses are required to be taken prior to First Semester courses, but are not only offered during Summer terms and may be taken earlier than the summer prior to the First Semester courses being offered in the fall.

Notes:

  1. Special admission and retention rules apply to all portions of the Fire Protection Technology Program. Admission to the program is selective and prior acceptance to the program is required before enrollment. See department chair, or department coordinator, for details.
  2. After successfully completing the above courses, students are eligible to apply to take the state Basic Structure Firefighter Certification Exam with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and the National Registry of EMTs Examination for Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
