Diagnostic Medical Sonography, AAS

Our twenty-four-month Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is designed to prepare skilled professionals to perform diagnostic examinations, as requested by a physician, using high-frequency sound waves to visualize soft tissue structures. Sonographers work in hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices.

After successful completion of the prerequisites, you will be eligible to apply and compete with other applicants for acceptance into the program. Enrollment is limited. Students who complete the twenty-four-month curriculum will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Students who successfully complete the curriculum are eligible to challenge the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) examination in general physics, abdominal, and OB/GYN sonography. The twenty-four-month general sonography portion of the program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). General Education Requirements: 20 Credits


Every Associate of Applied Science degree plan must contain at least 15 semester hours of general education courses. At least one course must be taken from each of the following areas: humanities/fine arts (language, philosophy & culture/creative arts), social/behavioral science (social and behavioral sciences/American history/government/political science), and natural science/mathematics (life and physical sciences/mathematics).

Selective Admissions  and retention rules apply. Department-specific courses must be taken in sequence and may have a prerequisite course. Major courses must be completed with a “C” or better for completion of degree. Contact the department chair for details.

All major and prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. In addition, all anatomy and physiology classes must have been taken within the last five years. A minimum grade of 75% is required in all diagnostic medical sonography courses (DMSO). The student who does not earn the minimum score may not be allowed to progress in the program.

Graduates are eligible to apply for admission to sit for the registry examinations in Abdomen, Obstetrics and Physics as administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
