The Vocational Nursing (VN) program prepares graduates to provide safe, patient-centered nursing care in structured healthcare settings for clients of all ages who have well-defined health problems with predictable outcomes. The curriculum is designed in alignment with the National League for Nursing (NLN) Outcomes and Competencies for Graduates of Practical/Vocational Nursing Programs, fostering human flourishing, sound nursing judgment, professional identity, and a spirit of inquiry in novice nurses.

Guided by the Texas Differentiated Essential Competencies (DECs) for Vocational Nursing, the program develops the graduate’s roles as Member of the Profession, Provider of Patient-Centered Care, Patient Safety Advocate, and Member of the Health Care Team, with an emphasis on collaboration, communication, and advocacy for quality care.

Throughout theory, skills laboratory, and clinical experiences, students apply clinical reasoning to make sound clinical judgments and use technical skills competently while upholding current Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs), including accurate patient identification, effective communication, safe medication use, infection prevention, fall reduction, and promotion of health care equity.

Successful completion of TJC’s VN curriculum leads to a Certificate of Proficiency and eligibility to seek licensure as a Vocational Nurse, prepared to deliver safe, quality care within the LVN scope of practice.
