Phlebotomists are an important part of the healthcare team in hospitals and medical clinics. They are responsible for drawing blood samples that are used for laboratory tests that physicians need for diagnosing diseases and disorders. Phlebotomists also work with clients donating blood, receiving transfusions, and participating in research studies.
Students studying to be phlebotomists will learn the proper techniques for drawing blood samples, as well as infection control. Phlebotomists need to be detail-oriented and good communicators. People are often anxious about giving blood, so being a phlebotomist also requires empathy and the ability to make people comfortable in stressful situations.
In addition to preparing students to be able to work as phlebotomists, completion of the Phlebotomy, Occupational Skills Award provides academic credit that students can apply toward the Medical Laboratory Technology, Associate of Applied Science degree.
Marketable skills for this award include: technical skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills.
