This Occupational Skills Award (OSA) is not a stand-alone award, but is embedded within the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Surgical Technology. As such, it cannot be pursued as a separate major, but will automatically be awarded to students who successfully complete their first term of Surgical Technology (SRGT) courses in the Surgical Technology, AAS program. Further education is required to be a Surgical Technologist and attain the AAS Degree in Surgical Technology. You will not be allowed to take the National Certifying Exam given by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), until you have obtained your AAS in Surgical Technology.

Surgical Technology is an exciting field where you’ll work as part of a surgical team, under the supervision of a surgeon, to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures. You’ll be responsible for preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative duties that’ll include: preparing the operating room (OR), creating and maintaining the sterile field, counting the necessary instruments, exposing the operative site with sterile drapes, specimen care, passing instrumentation and supplies to the surgeon, dressing application, and removal of used instruments from the OR.

While most surgical technologists are employed in hospital surgery departments, obstetric departments, and ambulatory care centers, there are options for experienced surgical technologists in specialized areas.

Our Surgical Technology, OSA includes both theory and lab experience designed to prepare you to work in or around a sterile environment. As stated above, further education is required to be a Surgical Technologist and attain the AAS in Surgical Technology. You will not be able to take the National Certifying Exam given by the NBSTSA, until you have obtained your AAS in Surgical Technology.

Marketable skills for this award include: critical thinking and detail-orientation.
